Transfer News 2023

The summer football transfer window in most European countries opened on June 10 and we have already seen plenty of completed deals across the continent.

Clubs have until September 1 to conclude their business, but most will want to get everything wrapped up before the 2023/24 season starts in August.

In this article we bring you the latest transfer news involving the biggest stars and the most popular clubs. Check back here for regular updates throughout the summer.

High-Profile Transfers

Here are 10 of the biggest transfers completed so far this summer, involving young starlets and experienced internationals.

Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham was always likely to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, with speculation about his future a constant feature of the 2022/23 season. Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United were all linked, but the England international ultimately chose Real Madrid.

With Luka Modric and Toni Kroos nearer the end than the beginning of their careers, Bellingham is ready to take the midfield mantle at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona

Manchester City’s treble of the PL, CL and FA Cup titles last term was a collective success, but there is no doubt that Ilkay Gundogan played a starring role for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The German then decided to seek pastures new when his contract expired. Barcelona tied Gundogan down to a two-year deal, with the experienced midfielder likely to be a regular starter for Xavi Hernandez’s team.

Mason Mount to Manchester United

Mason Mount and Chelsea were ultimately unable to resolve their contractual stalemate, so the London club decided to cash in on their academy product rather than risk losing him for free in 2024.

Manchester United won the race for his signature after agreeing a £55m fee with Chelsea. The midfielder will bring energy and quality to the United engine room in 2023/24.

Rasmus Højlund to Manchester United

It was no secret that Manchester United needed a striker this summer following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure last term and Wout Weghorst’s return to Burnley.

Rasmus Højlund very quickly emerged as their first choice and the Dane completed his switch from Atalanta to United in early August.

Lucas Hernandez to PSG

Luis Enrique is the next manager through the door at the Parc des Princes. The Spaniard, who will be looking to win the Ligue 1 club’s first ever CL, no doubt gave his blessing to the acquisition of Lucas Hernandez from Bayern Munich.

The French defender can play as a left-back or as a centre-half, and his versatility will be appreciated by his new boss.

Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool

It was never a secret that Liverpool were going to bolster their midfield ranks this summer. The first man through the door was Alexis Mac Allister, one of Argentina’s heroes from the end of 2022.

A consistently excellent performer for Brighton & Hove Albion, Mac Allister has PL experience and should be able to hit the ground running at Anfield.

Declan Rice to Arsenal

Manchester City were keen on Declan Rice but the former West Ham United captain chose to join Arsenal instead. Born and raised in London, the midfielder will continue his career in another part of the capital.

Rice will likely be an integral player for Mikel Arteta’s side. He possesses drive and energy, while his leadership qualities will be invaluable too.

Kim Min-jae to Bayern Munich

A revelation at the heart of Napoli’s defence last term, Kim Min-jae is now a Bayern Munich player. Having won Serie A with the Italian side in 2022/23, the South Korean will probably add a Bundesliga winner’s medal to his collection this season.

Given how highly regarded he is today, it is remarkable to think that Kim was plying his trade for Chinese outfit Beijing Guoan just two years ago.

Andre Onana to Manchester United

Manchester United decided against offering David de Gea a new deal, with the Spaniard departing the club when his contract expired on June 30. United have chosen Andre Onana, formerly of Inter, as their new No.1.

Onana is excellent with the ball at his feet, a noted weakness of De Gea’s. His presence between the posts should improve United’s ability to build from the back.

Josko Gvardiol to Manchester City

After a few weeks of tense negotiations with RB Leipzig, Manchester City finally struck a deal to land Josko Gvardiol, a talented 21-year-old centre-back.

The Croatia international was probably the standout defensive performer of last year’s international tournament, and he looks poised to become a regular for Pep Guardiola’s team.

Transfer Market Predictions

Which high-profile footballers might secure a move this summer? We have picked out five potential deals.

Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid?

Not for the first time, Kylian Mbappe is unhappy with the PSG hierarchy and that has cast a shadow over his future. Real Madrid need a new forward after Karim Benzema moved to Saudi Arabia, but will they bid now or wait until next summer?

Romeo Lavia to Liverpool?

After losing Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia, Liverpool need at least one more midfielder before the window closes. Romeo Lavia is their top target, but Southampton are driving a hard bargain.

Michael Olise to Chelsea?

Reports suggest Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise has a £35m release clause in his contract and Chelsea are thought to have submitted a bid. However, they could face competition for his signature from Manchester City.

Harry Kane to Bayern Munich?

Harry Kane is due to become a free agent in 2024 and Tottenham may therefore decide to sell him this summer in order to receive a fee. Bayern Munich want the England captain, but they will have to pay big money to land him.
